The term "hospital grade" is used often in marketing for breast pumps but this term can be a bit misleading & confusing.

What does "Hospital Grade" mean?

This term is typically used to describe larger pumps with stronger suction that are often available for use in the hospital & for rent at home. Hospital grade pumps are typically multi-use. You would purchase a pump kit that comes with all your pieces and because these pumps are considered "closed systems" they can be shared between moms. Common brands are the Medela Symphony, Spectra S3, Unimom Opera and the Ameda Platinum.

Issues with the term "Hospital Grade"

The term "hospital grade" is not a regulated term, which means any breast pump company can use it to market their pumps. This can be confusing & misleading for new families. Instead of choosing a pump that says it is "hospital grade" on their website, look for reviews from other moms, think about what you will need to pump for, how much you are going to use it & make sure to be properly fitted for your flanges.

Pros & Cons of Hospital Grade Pumps

Pros:

  • The suction strength is unmatched

  • Hospital grade pumps are often much more efficient

  • For moms who are wanting to increase their milk supply, are trying to bring in their milk supply for a premature baby, are exclusively pumping, etc. a hospital grade pump works wonders

Cons:

  • True hospital grade pumps are pricy $$$

  • They can also be pretty bulky which makes them less convenient to use

How You Can Get a True Hospital Grade Pump

While in the hospital, you can request to use a hospital grade pump (this can be especially important if your baby is admitted to the NICU). When you leave the hospital, you can ask if your hospital has a pump rental program. Many hospitals will rent out their pumps for a monthly fee. You can also purchase a hospital grade pump if you prefer through many pharmacies. You can check your benefits or insurance to see if you have any coverage for renting or purchasing a hospital grade pump.
